SIDNEY BECHET is one of LIONEL MARTIN’s heroes. I imagine he thought of me because I had played on his lap and blown into his soprano saxophone—my earliest memory of music. I was five years old.
I play the piano and various electronic devices, to which I’ve added some little birds I caught in Tangier in 2003 and a boxing match that Sidney attended after faking an illness—a move that canceled a performance of the operetta New Orleans, which would ruin my father, who had produced it in 1958.
Lionel plays soprano and tenor. I should even write “tenors,” since there are so many of them on Les oignons. Should I mention that I use random feedback on Petite Fleur ?

Release of the Sidney Bechet 45 rpm single featuring Lionel Martin, soundtrack to Carol Müller’s film Nachtwache (am Teufelsberg), and recent LP release Rock ’n Roll Station Redux Extraction by Nurse With Wound. I also mention that I’ve started reviewing records for the excellent online magazine Citizen Jazz, but I don’t say anything about my two new instruments—the Enigma synthesizer and an electric đàn bầu I brought back from Vietnam, which I’m learning to master. I’m never quite satisfied with making myself useful. “Doing the dishes”—these days, that means, for example, lugging around the entire inventory of the GRRR record collection, which involves lifting boxes of LP records that weigh a ton or crawling to the back of the attic to count the CDs. Of course, I have big plans that I’ll reveal in due time, and I always leave room for the unexpected—the kind of thing that makes my heart race when it happens.
