Raymond Sarti

Set designer and decorator.
Born into a family of artists, he initially trained at the École Boulle as a steel engraver and goldsmith. It was his work as a goldsmith that later led him to enroll at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs to study set design under Jacques Lemarquet, where he went on to teach the discipline. He leads workshops at various schools in France and other countries. His approach to set design emphasizes eclecticism and interdisciplinarity. His collaborations span theater, dance, circus, film, and—since 1992—exhibition design, architecture, and landscape design. While this approach is intended to be at the crossroads of the arts, it is theater that generates and guides his scenographic research, in the sense of a dramaturgical vision of space, where what is “at stake” and “intertwined” forms the basis of all reflection.

In 1989, he met Jean-Jacques Birgé for the production J’accuse by Un Drame Musical Instantané, for which he designed the set; then, in 1992, he created the set for the production Le K, both in collaboration with Richard Bohringer. In 1995, Jean-Jacques Birgé composed the music for the exhibition Il était une fois la fête foraine at the Grande Halle de La Villette; in 1997, for The Extraordinary Museum in Japan; and in 2002, for Jours de cirque at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. Raymond Sarti also designed several album covers (Le K, Urgent Meeting, Opération Blow up, Carton) for Un Drame Musical Instantané.
